Renaissance Costumes – Medieval Era Revisited

Nothing makes reliving the past more magical than renaissance costumes. With a wide variety of costumes and clothing to choose from, anyone donning these costumes could feel the real essence of living in the medieval era. From dressing up to being a gallant knight to a ravishing maiden, any classical look combined with that special flair is possible with renaissance costumes.

Costumes for Men

The renaissance costumes for men include gearing up and choosing among a vast selection of characters that can be portrayed. The most common of all is dressing up like either a warrior or a legionary which would have a person wearing a roman warrior costume. A knight’s costume would tend to have a medieval armor along with a black knee length cape and complimented with a sword. Other characters that are an option are peasants, common gentry, etc which requires some baggy pants and a ornate shirt.

Costumes for Women

For women, the costumes generally tend towards being very plain and simple. Here the renaissance costumes consist of the traditional peasant blouse, a floor length full skirt along with variations of cote and handkerchief around the neck. If elegance were to be looked over, then petticoat gowns with tight corsets could be chosen with a combination of roman sandals and appropriate headgear. In addition, a chemise tied around the neck along with a bodice to support the bust could also be an option.

Trick or Treat?

Renaissance costumes have always been a popular choice for Halloween. Costumes mixed with a tinge of imagination always bring out the best in the medieval era. While men can enjoy playing and impersonating being kings and knights, women can portray being a princess or a queen waiting for her prince charming. And of course, if nothing works out then there are always the evergreen characters of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra.

Choosing the Best

The best part of choosing renaissance costumes is that they do not necessarily have to be accurate. What matters the most is “style”. In fact, various mix and match schemes with these costumes can sometimes be a dazzling feast for the eyes.
